Dar City Basketball Club Makes History: First Tanzanian Team to Qualify for BAL Playoffs in Kigali

In a landmark achievement for Tanzanian basketball, Dar City Basketball Club has etched its name into the history books by becoming the first team from Tanzania to qualify for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs. The milestone was secured during the intense Kalahari Conference group phase in Pretoria, South Africa, where the debutants finished among the top four teams to earn a ticket to the playoffs in Kigali, Rwanda. The playoffs are scheduled to take place at the BK Arena in Kigali from May 22 to 31, 2026, marking a proud moment not just for Dar City but for the entire East African basketball community. Dar City joins regional rivals like Rwanda's RSSB Tigers as one of the few teams from the region (excluding host Rwanda) to reach this stage.A Remarkable Journey to the Big StageDar City's path to the BAL was anything but straightforward. The club, based in Dar es Salaam, first made waves by dominating the Road to BAL qualifiers. They posted strong wins in the group phase, including a dominant victory over Uganda's Namuwongo Warriors (83–70) and a record-setting performance against Comoros' Djabal Club (102–50), where a player dropped 52 points. In the Elite 16 stage held in Nairobi, Kenya, Dar City continued their impressive run with victories over teams from Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. Although they narrowly missed out in the semi-finals against the Johannesburg Giants (losing 71–69), they bounced back strongly in the third-place game, defeating Ferroviario da Beira of Mozambique 92–77 to clinch the final qualifying spot via the wild card route. This qualification made Dar City the first-ever Tanzanian representative in the BAL proper, a feat previous Tanzanian sides had attempted but never achieved.Strong Debut in the Kalahari ConferenceOnce in the BAL 2026 Kalahari Conference at SunBet Arena in Pretoria (March 27 to April 5, 2026), Dar City showcased their competitiveness against established continental powerhouses. They recorded key wins, including a convincing victory over the Johannesburg Giants, while battling tough opponents like Petro de Luanda (Angola), Al Ahly Ly (Libya), Nairobi City Thunder (Kenya), and the host conference's RSSB Tigers (Rwanda).
Despite some losses—including a heavy defeat to Al Ahly Ly and a later game against RSSB Tigers—Dar City demonstrated resilience and quality. With a mix of local talent and experienced international players (such as Hasheem Thabeet, Michael Foster Jr., Nisre Zouzoua, and others), the team secured one of the four precious playoff berths from the conference.
This accomplishment is particularly significant for East Africa: Dar City becomes only the second team from the region (outside of Rwanda) to reach the BAL playoffs, following in the footsteps of Kenyan and Ugandan efforts but surpassing previous attempts. What This Means for Tanzanian and East African BasketballDar City's success highlights the growing depth of basketball in Tanzania and the broader East African region. The club has rapidly risen since its establishment, winning multiple domestic titles in the National Basketball League (NBL) and Dar es Salaam leagues. Their debut BAL campaign, bolstered by strategic recruitment and coaching, signals a new era where Tanzanian teams can compete at the highest continental level.Fans and basketball enthusiasts across Tanzania are celebrating this breakthrough, with many looking forward to the team's performance in Kigali. The BAL playoffs bring together the top eight teams from the two conferences (Kalahari and Sahara) for an exciting knockout stage.
